Skilled migration program
The Skilled Migration Program in Australia is designed to attract and select individuals with specific skills, qualifications, and work experience to fill gaps in the Australian labor market. It’s a pathway for skilled workers from around the world to live and work in Australia permanently.
Skilled Migration Pathways:
Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189):
This visa is for skilled workers who do not have a sponsor, either from an employer or a family member in Australia.
To be eligible, applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the SkillSelect system and meet the minimum points requirement.
Points are awarded based on factors like age, English language proficiency, work experience, and qualifications.
If invited to apply, applicants can then lodge a visa application.
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190):
This visa is for skilled workers who have been nominated by a specific Australian state or territory government.
Applicants must meet the skills and nomination criteria of the state or territory that nominates them.
Similar to the Subclass 189, applicants need to submit an EOI through SkillSelect and meet the minimum points requirement.
Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491):
This visa is for skilled workers who are willing to live and work in regional Australia. It replaces the Subclass 489 visa.
Applicants must be sponsored by a family member living in a designated regional area or be nominated by a state or territory government.
Like the other skilled visas, applicants need to submit an EOI and meet the points requirement.
Key Points to Remember:
SkillSelect: All skilled migration applicants need to create an online profile in the SkillSelect system. This is where they submit their EOI and receive invitations to apply for a visa.
Points System: Skilled migration visas are points-tested, and the number of points required may vary based on your profile and the visa subclass you are applying for. Points are awarded for various factors, including age, English language proficiency, work experience, and qualifications.
Occupation List: Applicants must nominate an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list. The list may change over time, so it’s essential to check the latest updates.
Skills Assessment: Most skilled migration applicants need to undergo a skills assessment by a relevant assessing authority to ensure their qualifications match the Australian standards for their nominated occupation.
Permanent Residency: Skilled migration visas generally lead to permanent residency in Australia, allowing visa holders to live and work anywhere in the country.
It’s crucial to stay updated with the latest immigration policies and requirements as they can change. Consider consulting with a migration agent or using official resources from the Australian Department of Home Affairs for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
